DUBLIN, Ireland: Several schools in Carlow town and across the county received a threatening email saying there would be a mass shooting involving staff and children.
At least 10 primary schools in Carlow town and Tullow were told by gardaí not to open on May 27 because of the threat. Reports say up to 16 primary schools were targeted by two different emails. Some schools stayed closed, while others decided to open.
Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, a girls' primary school in the town, informed parents early in the morning that it would remain closed after receiving a threatening email. The school said the decision was made to protect the safety of students and staff, and that they are working closely with authorities.
Parents have been advised to follow official updates from their schools and not to share unverified information.
Several schools, including Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, the Church of Ireland Primary School, St Laserians Special School, Scoil Mhuire Lourdes in Tullow, and others, chose to close. In some cases, students were told not to come in or were sent home early.
The emails came from an unknown source. Local councilor and school principal Fergal Browne said the message was sent from an unknown Gmail account and mentioned a possible mass shooting. He confirmed schools are in contact with gardaí and that there is a stronger police presence in the area.
Browne said his school stayed open after speaking with gardaí. He reassured parents that the situation is being taken seriously, though it is upsetting for families and staff. He added that schools are being extra careful and following police advice.
He also said school safety should be reviewed again after the situation settles.
No secondary schools are known to have received the emails.
Gardaí said they are aware of the message sent to several schools and are currently assessing the threat's seriousness and credibility. They are in contact with the affected schools, but no further details are available yet.
